Not all African cichlids come from the well-known Great Lakes, and this category brings together a variety of species from other regions across Africa. These fish often offer something different in terms of behaviour, appearance, and care requirements, making them an interesting option for aquarists looking to explore beyond the more commonly kept groups. From river-dwelling species to lesser-known varieties, these cichlids can add diversity and individuality to an aquarium while still retaining the character and adaptability that African cichlids are known for.
African cichlids are not limited to Lakes Malawi, Tanganyika, and Victoria. Many species originate from rivers, smaller lakes, and other freshwater environments across the continent, offering a broader range of behaviours and characteristics.
This category includes other African cichlids for sale in the UK from trusted sellers, covering species that fall outside the major lake groups. Well-known examples include Kribensis, jewel cichlids, and other West African species, each with their own unique traits and care requirements.
Compared to lake-based cichlids, some of these species may have slightly different water preferences, with many favouring softer or more neutral conditions. Maintaining stable water quality and researching individual species remains essential for long-term success.
Tank setup will depend on the species, but many benefit from planted aquariums with natural décor, hiding spaces, and defined areas. Some of these cichlids can be more suitable for mixed community tanks compared to their lake-dwelling relatives, although compatibility should always be considered carefully.
Feeding requirements can vary, so providing a balanced and appropriate diet helps support healthy growth, colour, and overall condition.
For aquarists looking to move beyond the more commonly kept African cichlids, this category offers access to less typical and often more versatile species that can work in a wider range of setups.
You may also want to explore related categories such as Lake Malawi cichlids, Lake Tanganyika cichlids, and Lake Victoria cichlids to compare different environments and species types.
